HETFA is a partner in the ‘SciLMi – Meta-Scientific Literacies in the (Mis-)Information Age’ Erasmus+ Teacher Academy project, that aims to equip educators with the necessary competences needed to foster meta-scientific literacies of secondary-school students. Throughout the 3 years of the project, the SciLMi consortium develops, pilots and evaluates cross-disciplinary mobility programmes and trainings for pre- and in-service teachers to provide them with the required competences, digital skills and inclusive teaching strategies to educate the future generation. HÉTFA is responsible for leading the work package focusing on the development of the evaluation design, and for the implementation of the evaluation of SciLMi programmes and trainings.
As part of the SciLMi project, a good practice mobility was organised to Finland between September 2-4, 2024. Finland was chosen because of the country’s high ranking in the PISA 2018 science performance ranking and OSIS’s 2021 Media Literacy Index. Since Finland’s education system proved to be successful in countering fake news, the SciLMi team participated in the observation of innovative approaches to gain inspiration for the development of the SciLMi project’s deliverables. Besides the members of the SciLMi consortium, 5 teachers were invited from countries that are falling behind in democracy and media literacy indices (IDEA 2021, OSIS 2021, EIU 2022) to point out potential obstacles in their own countries to the approaches we witnessed. The feedback from these teachers will be taken into account during the development of the project’s trainings and programmes, to ensure the creation of truly useful outputs. During the good practice mobility, we visited education institutions such as the Aalto University, the University of Helsinki, the Otaniemi High School, and the European School of Helsinki. Moreover, we had the chance to visit the Finnish National Agency for Education, where Juho Helminen, Counsellor of Education gave a presentation about current topics in the digitalisation of education in Finland, and Teijo Koljonen, Counsellor of Education gave us an introduction to science education in Finland. After the good practice mobility, the consortium held the 4th SciLMi team meeting on site, where the specialised working groups made progress with designing lesson plans for the Blended Intensive Programmes and Trainings to be organised throughout the lifetime of the project.
