The project foRMAtion was invited to the inaugural ad hoc workshop of the ERA Action 17. The Action 17 forms part of the European Research Area (ERA) Agenda and aims to enhance the strategic capabilities of European research performing and funding organizations. This signifies the EU’s intention to address and find solutions for the challenges faced by research managers and administrators (RMAs) in Europe, including the uneven distribution of RMA communities and expertise across the continent, the need for training, acquisition of new skills, and networking opportunities for RMAs, as well as the lack of recognition for the profession of research managers or research support staff.

ERA Action 17 is sponsored by two Member States – Germany and Hungary – and the Aurora network of universities. Their primary role is to stimulate discussions on the implementation of the Action, propose topics for workshops, and develop recommendations that can be incorporated into relevant policies.

The first ad hoc workshop of ERA Action 17 took place in Brussels on 16th March 2023. Representatives from Member States, leading stakeholder organizations, and exemplary projects were invited to attend. The primary focus of the discussion was on the recognition of RMAs, which involved showcasing existing regional and national initiatives and identifying gaps that should be addressed either by the European Commission or Member State governments.

The main results and impacts of foRMAtion were summarized by Virág Zsár, Senior Grant Advisory of HETFA. Among the initiatives presented, foRMAtion was the only one that specifically targeted university students, raising awareness about the profession and offering a potential career pathway. Additionally, partners elaborated high-quality, open-source materials which can be used by a wide audience across Europe, including students, teachers, professors, early career RMAs, and trainer providing trainings for researchers or RMAs.

The next workshop of ERA Action 17 is taking place in Budapest on 10 May 2023. The event is organized during the Ambassador Meeting of the RM ROADMAP project, hosted by HETFA Research Institute.

The foRMAtion project held its final event in Brussels on 30 November 2022. More than 70 people showed up in person and approximately 300 people followed the online streaming, including policy makers, RMA experts and representatives of higher education institutions. On the previous day, the consortium partners and the Advisory Board gathered to evaluate the projects’ achievements in a last project meeting. In addition, the foRMAtion international curriculum and mentorship programme were further promoted through specialised training events offered to teachers and mentors.

The agenda of the event was very ambitious, including opening speeches, presentations and a roundtable discussion. Among other high-level speakers, the keynote speech was delivered by Stijn Delauré, Policy Officer at DG R&I of the European Commission. During the event, colleagues of HETFA intensely participated in the event and delivered presentations. Virág Zsár, Senior Grant Advisor and coordinator of the foRMAtion project, and Judit Fekete, Senior Project Manager from HÉTFA Research Institute introduced the speakers and moderated the event. Gábor Balás, Managing Director of HÉTFA Research Institute talked about past and present initiatives of HÉTFA to advance the RMA profession internationally. Krisztina Kovács from HÉTFA Research Institute outlined the foRMAtion Mentorship Programme and the experiences of the pilot testing with six students that graduated from the foRMAtion courses.

Under the lead of HETFA, the foRMAtion project is now disseminating its innovative outputs to a wide audience. As such, the consortium organises 5 public stakeholder events in 2022.

Following the success of the first event in Portugal, the second public event has been held in Ljubljana, Slovenia under the title “Learning RMA by doing RMA – Empowering Tomorrow’s Research Managers and Administrators through foRMAtion’s Mentorship Programme”. The Slovenian Forestry Institute hosted the event on their premises. More than 50 participants joined in person and online from more than 12 countries – including experts in the field of research management, policy makers and the National Contact Points’ Coordinator for Horizon Europe in Slovenia. The goal was to deliberate about various RMA mentorship programs around the world, including foRMAtion’s newly tested programme, as well as to discuss their possible implementation in the local institutional context. The event offered a great networking opportunity for those interested in incorporating mentorship into their institutional practice.

During the event, two colleagues from HETFA have delivered presentations. Virág Zsár, Senior Grant Advisor at HÉTFA, gave an overview of the foRMAtion project, including its goals and achievements so far. Judit Fekete, Senior Project Manager at HÉTFA, explained the novelty of the foRMAtion Mentorship Programme piloted this summer in 6 European research support offices with the participation of university students who have successfully completed the foRMAtion modules.

The public event in Slovenia has been a great success! The partnership is looking forward to the next events. The final and largest stakeholder event of foRMAtion on “The Future of Research Management Training in Higher Education – Insights from foRMAtion’s Teaching and Mentoring Experience to Professionalize Research Management” will take place in Brussels on 30 November 2022, 9:00 – 15:00. Agenda is available here and the registration form here.

Under the lead of HÉTFA, the ’foRMAtion – Innovative and smart module for potential Research Managers and Administrators in higher education’ project aims to support students in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) as potential Research Managers and Administrators (RMAs) by reinforcing the high-level and transversal skills needed for developing and managing excellent European research, innovation and educational projects. The project is implemented under Erasmus+ Key Action 2 Strategic Partnership in the field of Higher Education and coordinated by HÉTFA Research Institute.

The foRMAtion Mentorship Programme, under the lead of HÉTFA, is one of the key activities of the project. In total six HEI students participate in the programme from Corvinus University of Budapest (HU), Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania (RO) and NOVA University of Lisbon (PT). The selected students participate in an 8-week mentorship programme at partner institutions, which consists of both online and physical mobility, thus providing a blended learning opportunity. The mentorship programme enables students to get practical knowledge and hands-on work experience in the field of RMA. The programme is based on a mentorship programme methodology. Each student is paired with a mentor who previously completed a training on the methodology.

HÉTFA Research Institute welcomes a student from Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania in the frame of the mentorship programme between 20 June – 29 July 2022. Apor Dániel Geréb currently studies at International Relations and European Studies BA. Apor spends 6 weeks at HÉTFA’s office in Budapest, in addition he participates in online consultation sessions both before and after his stay in Budapest with the support his mentors, Krisztina Kovács and Judit Fekete. His main tasks consist of the followings: project management and administration in relation to the foRMAtion project and other relevant projects, social media content management, research assistance, participation in online and offline meetings. The main goal of the programme is to provide an insight for Apor to the everyday work of HÉTFA’s Division for International Cooperation, as well as hands-on work experience in the field of RMA.
